Sunset Cruise in Rhodes — What to Expect

A sunset cruise along the Rhodes coastline is one of the most magical experiences on the island. Here is everything you need to know.

Why a Sunset Cruise in Rhodes Is Worth It

The sun sets over the sea to the west of Rhodes. From the water, looking west towards the Turkish coast and the open Aegean, the light show lasts from about 30 minutes before sunset to 20 minutes after. On a clear evening in June or September the sky turns amber, then rose, then deep violet — and the coastline of Rhodes, with its medieval walls and forested hills, sits silhouetted against it. It is not a subtle experience.

Sunset cruises typically depart in the late afternoon (around 17:00–18:00) and return after dark (around 21:00–22:00). They cover two to three hours of sailing, usually northward along the coast from Rhodes Town past the medieval Old Town, then returning south with the sun behind the boat.

Types of Sunset Cruises Available

Shared sunset cruise (€39–€70 per person): The most popular and most affordable option. Typically on a larger catamaran or motorboat with 20–50 guests. Drinks (wine, beer, soft drinks) are usually included. Light food such as appetisers, bread and dips may be provided. Music on board. Best for groups and solo travellers who want a social atmosphere.

Private sunset catamaran (from €500 for the boat): The same views, same timing, but your group only. More intimate, more flexible. You choose who is on the boat. Possible to add a private dinner on board or a swim stop before dark.

Private sunset sailing trip (from €260 per trip): A quiet, wind-powered alternative with a small crew. If conditions allow, the skipper cuts the engine and you sail in silence as the light changes. One of the more romantic options in Rhodes.

What Makes a Good Sunset Cruise Better

The location matters less than the boat and the timing. The best sunset cruises in Rhodes:

  • Depart at the right time for the season (sunset times shift from 19:30 in May to 21:00 in July, back to 19:45 in September — confirm with your operator)
  • Include at least one swim stop in warm water while there is still light — swimming as the sun goes down is the experience most people remember most vividly
  • Serve decent drinks, not supermarket wine in paper cups
  • Have a crew that knows the west-facing coast well enough to position the boat correctly for the best view

Practical Details

Bring a light layer for the return journey — it gets cooler after dark on the water, even in summer. Sunset cruises can be affected by wind; operators will advise on the day if conditions change the route. Book in advance in July and August when evening departures are popular.
